Sita Piratti and NammAlwar: eleven similar traits...

SPLENDID EXCERPT FROM #"ACARYA HRDAYAM - A CRITICAL STUDY" BY DR. G. DAMODARAN#, IT EXPLAINS THE INTERCONNECTION OF SHREEMATI SITA-DEVI SHRINGARA EMOTIONS FROM "RAMAYANA" AND NAMMALWAR'S NAYIKA-BHAVA!

"The second type is to use the words of the 2 languages so closely that it is not possible for an ordinary reader to find out which are Sanskrit and which are Tamil.

At times even words of mono syllables are severed from their context and used with words of other language. A typical example for that is given here. Example:

The meaning of the surnai: Metaphorically Nammalvar is said to be Sita, The Wife of Rama, or The Consort of Lord Vishnu on the basis of the following 11 similarities they possess in their qualities and actions.

The main aspect is their inseparability from the Lord. A poet in using metaphor reveals his integral or universal vision where he sees similarities amongst things which appear to the ordinary vision as unconnected or even contradictory.

Our author with such a vision reveals similarities between different kinds of souls or characters coming in philosophy and itihasas.

To reveal this fundamental similarity, he uses the words of Nammalvar and also the words found in itihasas coming to describe the characters compared:

1. Sita so to say ceases to exist when separated from Rama. So does Alvar. ["Ramayana", Ayodhya-Khanda, 53-31 and "Tiruvoimozhi", 1-7-6]

2. Rama intimately moved with Sita and blessed Her. Alvar also speaks about the Lord coming into himself and identifying with him. ["Tiruvoimozhi", 2-7-9 and 2-6-10]

3. Sita was imprisoned in Lanka so that Rama came in search of Her and Alvar also speaks of his imprisonment. ["Tiruvoimozhi", 1-4-1]

4. Sita advised Ravana to be friendly with Rama. Alvar also advised people turned away from the Lord, to love and rely on the Supreme Being if they wanted to cross the ocean of births and deaths. ["Ramayana", Sundara-Khanda, 21-20 and "Tiruvoimozhi", 2-8-1]

5. Both of them - Sita and Nammalvar - speak with contempt about their life in this world when separated from their Lord. ["Ramayana", Sundara-Khanda, 26-25 and "Tiruvoimozhi", 4-8-1]
6. Both of them tried to put an end to their lives when they did not get His Blessing or when they were not favoured with the presence of their Lord. ["Ramayana", Sundara-Khanda, 28-16 and "Tiruvoimozhi", 5-4-3]

7. They were aware of the heroism or valour of their Lord and on occasions when they had to address Him, they lamented they could not but praise His heroic deeds. ["Tiruvoimozhi", 10-5]

8. When they suffered the pangs of separation they doubted the Mercy of their Lord. ["Ramayana", Sundara-Khanda, 26-13 and "Tiruvoimozhi", 2-4-3 and "Tiruviruttam", 36]

9. They sent messengers reminding their Lord that they preserve their lives only in the hope that they would certainly get His Grace or Mercy. ["Ramayana", Sundara-Khanda, 39-10 and "Tiruvoimozhi", 6-1-10]

10. Sita Devi speaks about the relationship between Herself and the Lord as that between Sun and its rays. Alvar also speaks of his joining the Lord who is a magnet light that could not allow Alvar to go away from Him. ["Ramayana", Sundara-Khanda, 21-15 and "Tiruvoimozhi", 2-3-6]

11.  Both of them speak of their impossibility of remaining separate from Lord Shree Narayana.  ["Tiruvoimozhi", 6-9-10]
Thus it is evident that Alvar has complete similarity with Sita Piratti who is The Queen of Rama, The Avatar of the Supreme Being (MahaVishnu).

The Chapter V ("Bridal Mysticism of Alvar and its philosophical interpretation") is truly unique - it contains amazing and rare explanations of jiva in the context of Bhagavan Shree Vishnu-Madhurya - very much recommended in case you are fond of Shringara-Rasa researches!!!

Shree NammAlwar: Personal Shriman Narayana and Upanishadic Siddhantas...

AS WE ALL KNOW ALWARS' PRABANDHAS ARE IMBUED WITH PURELY UPANISHADIC SIDDHANTAS.

IN THE FOLLOWING EXCERPT FROM #"NAMMALWAR"# A. SRINIVASA RAGHAVAN EXPLAINS THE INTERCONNECTION OF JNANA-TINTED UPANISHADIC SIDDHANTAS AND EMOTIONAL BHAKTI CONTEMPLATIONS WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN SHRI NAMMALWAR'S "TIRUVOIMOZHI":

"Nammalvar tries in places to express the all-inclusive inexpressible nature of Reality through paradox and writes in "Tiruvoimozhi":

Not Mukti, not Dasya in Vaikuntha...

The Concept of Ananya-Bhakti...

THE FOLLOWING EXCERPT IS FROM "SHARANAGATI AS DEPICTED IN THE MAHABHARATA" BY DR. S.G. PANDIT:

"In the Narayaniyopakhyana, which is narrated in the Santiparva of the Mahabharata, it is said that sage Narada had to perform great penance and devote himself thoroughly and intensely and then only through the Grace of Lord Narayana Himself that he could have the Lord’s Darsana.

Here the Supreme Lord himself states that He could be seen by an excellent devotee only with "Ananya-bhakti" (single minded devotion).

Lord Narayana is the Supreme Purusha; there is no one equal to Him or

Shreemati RangaNayaki-Devi is called "KamalaValli" in the story about Her Marriage with Bhagavan Shree RangaNatha. Very Beautiful Name!

"Magha Mahakavi" #by Chandika Prasad Shukla# [Sahitya Akademi] ~2010~

DOWNLOAD (Sanskrit-English):

English annotation by Vishnudut1926: Good philological research dedicated to "Shishupala-Vadha" by Magha Mahakavi - a poem extolling Bhagavan Shree Krishna as the destroyer of Shishupala.

The book has a detailed analysis of all Rasas, don't miss if you are fond of Bhakti, Rasas explanations and etc.

Chapter called "The fragrance of the fine statements" (page 103) is very interesting: it contains short maxims by Magha Mahakavi, for example:

2.65. सर्वः स्वार्थं समीहते sarvaH svArthaM samIhate - everyone is too egoistic and thinks about his benefit only

16.26. अनुहुंकुरुते घनध्वनिं न हि गोमायुरुताने केसरीanuhuMkurute ghanadhvaniM na hi gomAyurutAne kesarI - A lion roars against the thundering sounds of clouds but not against the yelpings of the jackals.

P.S. Speedread in 20 minutes for me and only 3 links to download, as the researches of this kind are not crucial for my E-Library (my blog focuses mainly on Shree RamanujAcharya and Shree MadhvAcharya Sampradayas Granthas).
Nevertheless the research is definitely worth of reading in case you want to be more literate in Bhakti, poetic Sanskrit and Rasas!

The dirtier is jiva: Vatsalya, "cow-to-dirty-calf-attitude" and Doshabhogyatva of Bhagavan Shree Narayana...

As I noticed in my annotation M. Narasimhachary in his research #"SRI VEDANTA DESIKA"# not only summarizes Tenkalai/Vadakalai Siddhantas, but also makes attempts to reconcile them.

The following excerpt reconciles 2 opinions regarding "Doshabhogyatva" of Bhagavan Shree Narayana.

"Doshabhogyatva" = "enjoying sins of prapanna by Bhagavan Shree Narayana due to the sins being an incentive for help and forgiveness from the side of Bhagavan Shree Narayana". [in Sanskrit "dosha = defect" and "bhogya = something to be enjoyed"]

According to Doshabhogyatva-Siddhanta Bhagavan Shree Narayana is akin to a cow who licks all the dirt off her child-calf instead of punishing her disobedient and silly offspring!

For this reasong Doshabhogyatva is closely connected with Vatsalya-Bhava of Bhagavan Shree Narayana!

"Doshabhogyatva" is the crucial part of Tenkalai Siddhanta (Shree Pillai LokAcharya, the Southern Branch of Shree Ramanuja-Sampradaya).

If you are interested in Tenkalai (Shree Pillai LokAcharya) opinion regarding "Doshabhogyatva" please refer to #"Shree Vachana-Bhushanam"# not to separate Shlokas dedicated to "Doshabhogyatva", but to overall complex logical chains which Shree Pillai LokAcharya constructs.

If you study just separate Shlokas out of "Shree Vachana-Bhushanam" entire context and its integral unity, you are at risk of conceiving the Doshabhogyatva-idea in a wrong way!
M. NARASIMHACHARY - "NATURE OF BHAGAVAN SHREE NARAYANA VATSALYA" (FROM  #"SRI VEDANTA DESIKA"#): "Differences arise between the

Razor and honey...

"Annamacharya likens the Samsara to 3 things:

1. a poisonous fruit - Musidi pandu - known for its external charm,

2. a serpent incessantly emitting poison and

3. a razor with its sharp edge smeared with honey.

Men, he says, go to appropriate the poisonous fruit of Samsara lured by its external charm.

Like fools, who lick honey smeared on the sharp edge of the razor and thereby get their tongue bruised, these men fall preys to seemingly pleasant Samsara and thus get themselves entangled in it.

They go to play frolic with this venomous serpent with the least awareness of the consequences. Annamayya expresses his anxiety over man becoming sense-indulgent:
"Alas! What would be the fate if the mind itself becomes a slave of sense objects? What would be the fate of the kingdom if the king himself joins the band of thieves? What would be the fate of man if his mouth itself starts relishing bitter?"
