"SrimanNarayaniyam of Melpathur Narayana Bhattatiri" [Sanskrit-English] #Central Chinmaya Mission Trust# ~Bombay 1988~

DOWNLOAD (Sanskrit-English):

English annotation by Vishnudut1926: This is the poetic rendering of "Shree Bhagavata-Purana" ("Shreemad-Bhagavatam"), composed by Narayana Bhatta. It is very famous in Tamil-Nadu and Kerala.

By the way, never trust Wikipedia, because, for example, the Wikipedia article about "Narayaniyam" (#wiki article link) has 3 (!!!!!!!!) mistakes or I would rather say blunders.

Wikipedia mistake 1. The one, claiming that "the final dasaka, Kesadipaada Varnanam, embodies top-to-toe picture of little (WRONG!) Krishna in all grace and glory"

Actually not "little", because Narayana Bhatta in "Narayaniyam" writes about Kaishora-Krishna, surrounded by Gopis - दिव्यकैशोरवेषं - divyakaishoraveShaM. Why? Because Narayana Bhatta actually retells the Siddhanta from "Shree Krishna-Upanishad" in the final dasaka.

And as we all remember "Shree Krishna-Upanishad" is actually about Bhagavan Shree MahaVishnu - श्रीमहाविष्णुं सच्चिदानन्दलक्षणंshrImahAviShNuM sachchidAnandalakShaNaM - as "Shree Krishna-Upanishad", Mantra 01 says.

It is correctly noted in the Sanskrit-English edition, that Narayana Bhatta tells about "budding youth" and "upto 16 years of age Krishna"

Wikipedia mistakes 2 and 3. Wikipedia claims, that "the Bhagavata Purana is a major (WRONG!) Hindu scripture consisting of about 18,000 verses, mainly devoted to the worship of Krishna (WRONG!)"

A) "Shree Bhagavata-Purana" is NOT "a major Hindu scripture". The Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva) + 18 Puranas + sometimes "Shree Bhagavad-Gita" + various Agamas/Tantras are considered to be major.

And every Sampradaya has its own major set of Granthas.

For example, for Shree Ramanuja-Sampradaya the major Scriptures are Dravida Vedas + "RigVeda" + "Shree Vishnu-Purana" + PanchaRatra (Vaishnava Agamas and Tantras).

For Shaktas and various Shakta-Sampradayas: "Shreemad-Devi-Bhagavatam", "Shree Brahmanda-Purana" + "Atharva-Veda" + Shakta Tantras/Agamas.

B) "Shree Bhagavata-Purana" is NOT "mainly devoted to the worship of Krishna". "Shree Bhagavata-Purana" is actually all about various Avataras of Bhagavan Shree Narayana (Shree Vishnu) and, speaking about worship in practical/pragmatic sense, it is very famous because of "Shree Narayana-Kavacham"!

"Shree Bhagavata-Purana", 12.12.2 says विष्णोश् चरितम् अद्भुतम्viShNosh charitam adbhutam - "This Purana is all about wonderful life of Bhagavan Shree Vishnu".

"Shree Bhagavata-Purana", 12.12.19 says - आवताराश् च विष्णोर् AvatArAsh cha viShNor - "This Purana is also about Vishnu-Avataras".

"Shree Bhagavata-Purana", 12.12.27 says - यत्रावतीऋणो भगवान् कृष्णाख्योyatrAvatIRRiNo bhagavAn kRRiShNAkhyo - "And Krishna who was an Avatara of Bhagavan Shree Vishnu".

And Narayana Bhatta correctly writes at the end of "Narayaniyam", that his Grantha, being the poetic rendering of the original "Shreemad-Bhagavatam" was actually dedicated to Leela-Avataras of Bhagavan Shree Narayana:

Now about the edition. The scan is great, the English rendering is superb too!
The very praisable feature of Narayana Bhatta is that he follows to the original "Shree Bhagavata-Purana" in the very precise manner: he is neither over-sentimental and too Krishna-flute-Vrindavana-centered like various over-emotional Krishna-Bhakti-Acharyas, nor rigidly mayavadik as various Jnana-Advaita-Acharyas.
Narayana Bhatta conveys the true message of "Shree Bhagavata-Purana", so "Narayaniyam" and especially the edition I have written above is more than worthy of being added into one's reading list!
