"SRIRANGA KSHETRA MAHATMYAM" #by R. Narasimhan# [Sri Sudarsana Jyotisha Mantralaya, SriRangam] ~4th edition~

DOWNLOAD (English):

English annotation by Vishnudut1926: Lovely vintage edition! The 1st part of the Grantha is about Shree RangaKshetra, while the 2nd part is about Alwars.

Shreemati RangaNayaki-Devi is called "KamalaValli" in the story about Her Marriage with Bhagavan Shree RangaNatha. Very Beautiful Name!

This scan belongs to my E-Library on Cryptpad (E-Library, containing crucial and the most recommended Vaishnava-Granthas), you can visit here - #Cryptpad light E-Library#

P.S. The cover of the scan was without top (without word "SriRanga"), I have recovered it in GIMP and FOTOR. The original scan cover looks like this:

I liked very much the following image of Sudarshana Alwar from #"SRIRANGA KSHETRA MAHATMYAM" by R. Narasimhan#. The scan is of vintage quality, so I have recovered the image via GIMP ["bilateral-repair"-filtre and "retinex"-filtre]:

English annotation by Vishnudut1926: Nice compilation dedicated to Sharanagati in multifaceted aspects. Not only the view of Shree Ramanuja-Sampradaya is mentioned, but Nimbarkas/SwamiNarayan/Gaudiya/VallabhAcharya/Shakta/Shaiva/Sikhs points of view as well.

As for me personally I liked "Sharanagati in PanchaRatra Agama" by Sadhu ShrutiPrakashaDas (starts from page 33) - this article tells about 6-Fold Sharanagati in "Shree Prashna-Samhita" and mentions "Shree Shesha-Samhita" - very good PanchaRatrik background!

"TIRUPPAVAI BY ANDAL (GODA) ILLUSTRATIONS" (32 Nineteenth Century Line Drawings) [Tyaga Bharati] ~1989~

English annotation by Vishnudut1926: This is unique edition of "Tiruppavai" by Shreemati Andal-Devi (Shreemati Goda-Devi) with the line-art illustrations! Very much recommended!

"Magha Mahakavi" #by Chandika Prasad Shukla# [Sahitya Akademi] ~2010~

DOWNLOAD (Sanskrit-English):

English annotation by Vishnudut1926: Good philological research dedicated to "Shishupala-Vadha" by Magha Mahakavi - a poem extolling Bhagavan Shree Krishna as the destroyer of Shishupala.

The book has a detailed analysis of all Rasas, don't miss if you are fond of Bhakti, Rasas explanations and etc.

Chapter called "The fragrance of the fine statements" (page 103) is very interesting: it contains short maxims by Magha Mahakavi, for example:

2.65. सर्वः स्वार्थं समीहते sarvaH svArthaM samIhate - everyone is too egoistic and thinks about his benefit only

16.26. अनुहुंकुरुते घनध्वनिं न हि गोमायुरुताने केसरीanuhuMkurute ghanadhvaniM na hi gomAyurutAne kesarI - A lion roars against the thundering sounds of clouds but not against the yelpings of the jackals.

P.S. Speedread in 20 minutes for me and only 3 links to download, as the researches of this kind are not crucial for my E-Library (my blog focuses mainly on Shree RamanujAcharya and Shree MadhvAcharya Sampradayas Granthas).
Nevertheless the research is definitely worth of reading in case you want to be more literate in Bhakti, poetic Sanskrit and Rasas!

The dirtier is jiva: Vatsalya, "cow-to-dirty-calf-attitude" and Doshabhogyatva of Bhagavan Shree Narayana...

As I noticed in my annotation M. Narasimhachary in his research #"SRI VEDANTA DESIKA"# not only summarizes Tenkalai/Vadakalai Siddhantas, but also makes attempts to reconcile them.

The following excerpt reconciles 2 opinions regarding "Doshabhogyatva" of Bhagavan Shree Narayana.

"Doshabhogyatva" = "enjoying sins of prapanna by Bhagavan Shree Narayana due to the sins being an incentive for help and forgiveness from the side of Bhagavan Shree Narayana". [in Sanskrit "dosha = defect" and "bhogya = something to be enjoyed"]

According to Doshabhogyatva-Siddhanta Bhagavan Shree Narayana is akin to a cow who licks all the dirt off her child-calf instead of punishing her disobedient and silly offspring!

For this reasong Doshabhogyatva is closely connected with Vatsalya-Bhava of Bhagavan Shree Narayana!

"Doshabhogyatva" is the crucial part of Tenkalai Siddhanta (Shree Pillai LokAcharya, the Southern Branch of Shree Ramanuja-Sampradaya).

If you are interested in Tenkalai (Shree Pillai LokAcharya) opinion regarding "Doshabhogyatva" please refer to #"Shree Vachana-Bhushanam"# not to separate Shlokas dedicated to "Doshabhogyatva", but to overall complex logical chains which Shree Pillai LokAcharya constructs.

If you study just separate Shlokas out of "Shree Vachana-Bhushanam" entire context and its integral unity, you are at risk of conceiving the Doshabhogyatva-idea in a wrong way!

Razor and honey...

"Annamacharya likens the Samsara to 3 things:

1. a poisonous fruit - Musidi pandu - known for its external charm,

2. a serpent incessantly emitting poison and

3. a razor with its sharp edge smeared with honey.

Men, he says, go to appropriate the poisonous fruit of Samsara lured by its external charm.

Like fools, who lick honey smeared on the sharp edge of the razor and thereby get their tongue bruised, these men fall preys to seemingly pleasant Samsara and thus get themselves entangled in it.

They go to play frolic with this venomous serpent with the least awareness of the consequences. Annamayya expresses his anxiety over man becoming sense-indulgent:
"Alas! What would be the fate if the mind itself becomes a slave of sense objects? What would be the fate of the kingdom if the king himself joins the band of thieves? What would be the fate of man if his mouth itself starts relishing bitter?"
Cited from
by Dr. H.L. Chandrasekhara, p. 103

Anthropomorphic approach to God...

"Hinduism distinguishes 3 approaches towards perfection depending upon the dominance of the intellectual, emotional and volitional aspects of human being.

They are the paths of knowledge (Jnana), devotion (Bhakti) and action (Karma).

The emphasis of Jnana-Marga is on the harmony of intellect and emotion. Its domineering aspect, however, is intellect.

The human sentiments are not given expression to freely by the aspirant, but only done under the ruling guidance of the intellect.

The emphasis of Karma is on volition which expresses itself in the form of action.

But in the path of Bhakti, the domineering element is emotion. A devotee does not quell his sentiments, but retains and gives full expression to them even as a worldly man does.

However, the object on which he casts all his feelings is not finite but infinite. He distinguishes himself from the aspirant adhering to the path of knowledge in that he does not regulate his sentiments.

Again he (bhakta) is different from a worldly man in that he directs all his feelings towards God. He agrees with the first in that God is his ultimate goal.

He shares common characteristic with the second in respect of his retention of the feelings and emotions.
This is his anthropomorphic approach to God, the approach to infinite through finite feeling.
If he wants to extol, he extols God. If he wants to be a slave, he will be a slave to none but God.

If he wants to quarrel he quarrels with God.

Or if he wants to fondle he fondles God converting the Supreme into a child.

If he wants to love, he loves God as a woman does her beloved.

Thus his devotion assumes five major forms, viz. Santa, Dasya, Sakhya, Vatsalya and Madhurya".

Cited from
by Dr. H.L. Chandrasekhara, p. 148

Deluded karma buyers...

"The falsity of Samsara is also signified by the simile of dream. Further the provisional nature of men's life is described by the analogy of play.

According to Annamayya man's day-to-day life is a drama enacted by Lord Venkateshwara.

The intermediate things happening in between the certainties of birth and death in man's life, viz., his consumption of food, wearing the garments, his seemingly happy moments are "plays" - "Natakamu".

Another comparison Annamayya gives, is that of a fair. The world is a big fair.

The customer, viz., man comes to this fair to buy an article, namely Karma, enjoys a part of it and reserves the main portion of it for the next birth which may be either in the mortal world or in the upper world.

Annamayya bemoans men deludedly thinking of the fair itself to be the source of merriment. "Santakutamule sarasamulaya."

Purandaradasa similarly describes the provisional nature of man's life on the earth when he says: "The real house is there (in Vaikuntham). Our stay here is casual".

"Vedartha Sangraha of Sri Ramanuja" #translated into English by M.R. RajaGopala Ayyangar# ~1956~

DOWNLOAD (English):

English annotation by Vishnudut1926: Excellent English translation by M.R. RajaGopala Ayyangar, published in 1956.

The 1st part of "Shree VedArtha-Sangraha" is anti-mayavadic: it refutes various mayavadis (Shankara, Bhaskara and etc.)

The 2nd part conveys Vishishta-Adwaita basics in a compact form. By the way, OM VishnuPad Shree RamanujAcharya often cites "Shree Vishnu-Purana" in the 2nd part.

Moscow got totally white these days...

After 3 days of heavy snowing Moscow turned into completely white city! Apart from the photos above you can watch vimeo clip (captured from my flat's window):

Garuda-Shloka from "Shree KrishnAmrita-Maharnava" by MadhvAcharya (AnandaTirtha)...

Last week I have written the extensive Russian article dedicated to Garuda (based on "Shree Stotra-Ratnam" by Shree YamunAcharya and "Shree Garuda-Dandakam"/"Shree Garuda-Panchasat" by Shree Vedanta Desika).

According to Shree Ramanuja-Siddhanta "Garuda = Sankarshana-Vyuha of Bhagavan Shree MahaNarayana". One of the Sankarshana-Vyuha's functions (apart from teaching Ekantika-Narayana-Prapatti-Marga to jivas) is protection in all senses - from spiritual downfalls, narakas (hells) and etc.

This week, reading a Hindi edition of "Shree KrishnAmrita-Maharnava" by Shree MadhvAcharya (AnandaTirtha), I was very glad to find the separate Verse dedicated to Garuda! It is the Verse 42, it also dwells on protection:
